Shimla Summer Festival
Shimla during May and June, bursts into a riot of colours and freshness, ready to welcome summer. There’s plenty of cheer and gaiety all around at this marvelous hill station in Himachal Pradesh, as this is the period when everything in this hill city is lush green and colourful and crops are ready to be harvested. During this time, a Summer Festival is organized where the locals, both men and women, gather in large numbers to celebrate, sing, dance and pray to God in thankfulness for a good crop and for continued blessings in times to come.
During the festival, which is mostly a 10 day extravaganza, several events are organized, which include a food festival, folk dances, flower shows, an ice-skating festival, a photography competition and even an Himachal Film Festival. The Summer Festival, essentially provides a platform for the locals to exhibit their talent and showcase the work of many renowned artists from all over the country. Musical performances by eminent musicians are also held. On each day of the festival, some famous personality is called upon stage to entertain the audience.
The Summer Festival is an ideal time for locals to come out and enjoy with their families. Events are organized for every age group and the atmosphere is one of revelry and festivity. Sports tournaments are held for both children and adults. Kids are also encouraged to participate in poster-making and several other fun competitions. School children also put up cultural shows and participate in talent contests. Surprisingly even Fashion shows are held, where local folk dresses and attire are exhibited It is also one of the best times to pick up local artifacts and handicrafts from the several stalls that are put up during this time.
Mall Road and Ridge Road are decorated for this event, where most of the activity will take place. It is a fun, exhilarating and wonderful time to visit Shimla, with its cool, beautiful weather and joyful atmosphere.

By air – The nearest airport to Shimla is at Jubarhati, about 23 kms away and has flights coming in from Delhi and Chandigarh. From here one can take a taxi to Shimla.
